Firm Overview
Drury Capital, Commodity Trading Advisor, Founded 1993
Drury Capital Inc grew out of the commodity trading experience of Bernard Drury, principal and founder. Bernard entered the grain markets with Louis Dreyfus Corp in 1978. Numerous fruitful experiences as a trader and analyst, including at the Minneapolis Grain Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade, led him to establish the firm 15 years later.
Initially, as a CTA, Drury managed a portfolio of grain markets on a strictly discretionary, fundamentally-oriented basis. Over time, he came to think that some of his insights on market behavior could be categorized and systematized. His exposure to long-term trends in the grain markets led him to conduct research on technical trend-following techniques.
Inspired by the seasonality of grain markets, this eventually led to a fully systematic, broadly diversified portfolio of futures markets, the aim of which was to capture trends with an average duration measured in months. Known as the Drury Diversified Trend-Following Program (DDTFP) this investment program has become our “flagship” product, now in operation for more than 25 years.
While Drury believes that markets are generally ruled, in the long run, by fundamentals, he believes that they can be traded “technically”, meaning that price action in and of itself can provide the means for logical decision making. The systematic approach to technical trading means that human error is eliminated from the basic buy/sell decision, and that risk control can be enforced through iron-clad a priori rules. Finally, systematic trading can be applied to a vast array of markets, producing risk-mitigating effects of diversification that few fundamentally based traders can obtain.
